Current Trends in Animal Research & its Impact on Your Health
Jennifer C. Smith '91 D.V.M., Bioresources Department director for Henry
Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan and UF Trustee

Current trends in biomedical research include the reduction and replacement of animals by the adoption of mathematical modeling, database analysis, computer simulations, and in vitro models, like cell and tissue cultures. Some believe technological advances will one day make animal studies unnecessary, while others argue that “nonliving” models will never be capable of reliably replicating all of the uses of laboratory animals. Regardless of the method, the focus of biomedical research will continue to seek and answer questions with the goal of improving human and animal health.
